Keeps our Conservation Officer happy. The students of Victoria High School in Ulverston are staunch supporters of the World Owl Trust. Thanks to the efforts of the ASDAN Youth Award Group, Year 10, the meadow and wild areas of Muncaster have benefited from their hard work in clearing away encroaching brambles. On one of their last working party visits to the Owl Centre, they arrived bearing gifts in the form of useful tools for our Conservation work and for conservation projects.
The Trust received a strimmer, two pairs of secateurs, two spades, two shovels, a pair of extendable lopping shears, two bow saws and a wheel barrow; all brand new and top quality, purchased from funds raised at the school. The students have also paid for the seed which will be sown on the meadow and raised £150 to be used at the Centre and on conservation projects. The students are pictured handing the tools to our Collection Manager, David Armitage.
Their leader, Grahame Smith, long standing member of the Trust and a teacher at Victoria School, often rings the office to ask how the students can help and what the Trust is in need of. We chatted recently and told him that one of the jobs we might need help on was to put in flagged steps in our off show breeding area.
“No problem” said Grahame, have you obtained the flags?” No. “Leave it to me” and lo and behold, Grahame obtained the flags, the students have delivered them and work has begun on making the new pathway.
Its great to see a plan come together and words turning into action. Our heartfelt thanks to Grahame and the students of Ulverston School for their steadfast support, hard work and commitment to saving owls in practical ways.
