Description A medium sized owl with medium sized, conspicuous, outward slanting ear-tufts. They are a tawny-rufous to dark brown colour above with blackish streaks on their plumage. The tail is a dull rufous brown with dark brown barring and the throat is a whitish colour. The rest of the under parts are a pale rufous brown with dark brown streaks. The toes are naked and the eyes are yellow. The bill is horn blue at the base and yellow at the tip.
Size 40-43cm
Range Philippines, recorded from the islands of Luzon, Catanduanes, Mindanao, Samar and Leyte.
Habitat Forests, often near lakes or rivers.
Food Not known, its powerful feet suggest it feeds on small mammals and birds.
Breeding This owl lays one egg per clutch and has an incubation period of 35 days.
Call The song of the male consists of a series of long, deep, staccato notes given at 4 second intervals and fading away at the end.
Status VU - Vulnerable.
Comments The World Owl Trust supports the Philippine Owl Conservation Programme which has successfully bred Philippine Eagle Owls in captivity.
