Overseas Projects Round Up

PHILIPPINES
Philippine Owl Conservation Programme (POCP). Working alongside the UK Owl Taxon Advisory Group in partnership with the Philippine Government to ensure the survival of endangered endemic owl species and their habitats. The Trust is currently carrying out research into the status of the birds in the wild and setting up in-situ and ex-situ captive-breeding programmes, with special emphasis on the rare Philippine Eagle Owl Bubo philippensis, plus habitat restoration involving local people.
JAPAN
Liaison with the Wildlife Preservation Bureau of Hokkaido Corporation to work on the island of Hokkaido to protect and increase the numbers of the seriously endangered Blakiston’s Fish Owl Ketupa blakistonii. Research, observation, captive-breeding and release, public education programmes.
MALAYSIA
Setting up of a World Owl Trust affiliated Owl Centre in Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with Felda Agricultural Ltd., with emphasis on endemic Malaysian species.
ARUBA ISLAND (NORTH SOUTH AMERICA)
Working with the Aruba Veterinary Department to protect the threatened endemic Burrowing Owl Athene cunicularia arubensis by means of the creation of artificial nesting sites.
OMAN
Working with the Oman Natural History Museum, Sultanate of Oman, to determine taxonomy of North African Eagle Owls.
ETHIOPIA
Rehabilitation of Ethiopian Eagle Owl Bubo capensis dillionii on behalf of the Ethiopian Government.
BELIZE
Programme for Belize (PFB) - The Trust has subscribed to the purchase of 50 acres of rainforest in the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area (World Land Trust), the home of at least 15 species of owl.
DANJUGAN ISLAND (Philippines)
The Trust is involved in the purchase of Danjugan Island as an ecological reserve, as part of the World Land Trust’s PHILIPPINE REEF & RAINFOREST PROJECT.
CANADA
Affiliation with the Society for the Conservation & Research of Owls (SCRO) - Canada in co-operative owl conservation programmes, including that for the endangered Queen Charlotte Owl Aegolius (arcadius) brooksi.
GERMANY
Affiliation with SCRO - Germany in co-operative owl conservation projects and captive-breeding programmes.
HOLLAND
Working with Dutch Animal Rescue Centres to rehabilitate confiscated owls from Holland.
FLORES
Involvement with, and funding for University of East Anglia expedition to Flores Island, Lesser Sundas, to carry out faunistic survey and search for the Flores Scops Owl Otus alfredi. Continued presence of this owl confirmed.
